Special Notes on Monster and it's TP Moves
Hecteyes are BLM type monsters. They will cast various Black magic spells including -ga spells and Ancient Magic. They are also resistant to physical damage. Death Ray can hurt when used. For players near the Hecteyes level the damage can be significant. Petrogaze is very dangerous, and can last for a bit. |

Minimum Blue Mage Level Needed To Acquire Spell: Level 24
Death Ray is best hunted
in Ranguemont Pass.
This spell can be soloed by the Upper 30's safely. Help is recommended if you plan to get it sooner. A single high level friend will be enough for the low level Hecteyes. There is aggro on the way to camp. Sneak and Invisibility should be at hand. Have remedies to deal with paralysis. Set Head Butt for dealing with the spells the Hecteyes will cast. Chaotic Eye can be useful also.
The Ranguemont Pass camp is slightly better because the Hecteyes do not use the Petrogaze or Carthasis move there. This not only makes the fights safer, but since these Hecteyes only have two TP moves, you'll see Death Ray much sooner and more often. There are five spawns there at J-8, marked on the map above with a red circle. The Hecteyes do aggro, but will not link. Goblins are sight aggro, and the bats are sound. Take care on the way to camp. This camp is a bit harder to reach then Camp #2 below, as there is aggro all the way to it, and even in it. If you are not out of aggro level it can be a difficult trip. The three Taisai are farther in at G-5, and you can learn the spell from them also. But as a special NM spawns only of they are left alone and not killed, it's polite to not kill them. So be a good community member and let them be.
Proceed to Attohwa Chasm, and just after you zone in and follow the path down a bit, you will see a small round room at G-10 with several Hecteyes in it. They will aggro, but not link, so you can safely pull them out of the room one at a time for fights. Since the Hecteyes here can use Petrogaze, having a White Mage to remove the petrification effect can make a big difference for your fights. Another option, is that since it's a Gaze move, if you fight with your back to the Hecteye, just casting low damage spells to feed TP, you will not be petrified or paralysed by the TP moves the Hecteye may use. You want to be in your low 40's to solo here safely. With a single high level helper, you should have no issues here.
There are many other mid and high level Hecteyes in other zones, where one can learn the spell also. With the excellent low level options in Camps 1 and 2, these are not recommended.

Special notes about the spell a Blue Mage may like to know
Can I solo it? Yes. Once you move into your upper 30's to low 40's you can in the first two camps. Help makes this one much simpler if you hunt it at a lower level.
Do I need any special items? Yes, a way to sneak and invisible yourself is needed to get to camp 1. Remedies for status effects will help. Set head Butt for -ga spell stunning, Chaotic Eye can help. A throwing item to pull is very useful.
Do Hecteyes like to use the move? It's not on the top of the list for them, so it can take a bit. Since the Ranguemont Pass eyes only have two moves, you will see it there much faster and more often.
The Spell bursts for very good damage. |
