Obtaining the Spell
Minimum Blue Mage Level Needed To Acquire Spell: Level 40
Self-Destruct is best hunted in Gusgen Mines.

This spell can be soloed easily starting in the upper 40's. You can learn it at level 40 off the weak bombs listed in later camps. No party is needed for the Gusgen Mine camp.

Sneak and Invisibility may be needed to reach camp. A Stun spell should be equipped.

Bomb Hunting Grounds Camp #1
Name Level Location
Spunkie 28-30 Gusgen Mines
Feu Follet 35-38 Gusgen Mines

Enter the mine and proceed to the left most door at G-6. If it is closed open it using the lever in front of the door.

Once past the door, Head for F-6 where the map is marked with a G. There are four Spunkie along the way in the large rooms. You may as well fight them for your spell while you are here!

The Spunkies have between 700 and 850 hit points total. This is important to keep in mind for ones survival. Soloing the Spunkies at the level you will be learning (around 50) is a snap. You just need to hit them until they decide to Self-Destruct.

The Problem, is that if the Bomb chooses Self-Destruct while it still has most of its HP, it may have enough to kill you. So you have two choices to deal with this. You can go all out with damage spells when you start, and take away 50% of the bombs life, then switch to a low damage weapon to feed TP to the bomb as you wait for the spell. Or you can Head Butt Self-Destruct if it happens before the Bomb's life is low enough for your comfort. Since Head Butt sometimes fails, it's suggested to use the reduce the Bomb's HP fast method.

You need to let the Bomb Self-Destruct to learn the spell. On the bright side, it ends the fight also!

Once you are on the third map you are close to you camp. There are Fly, Fungar, Slime, and Ghost type monsters in this area. All will aggro if you are too low. Since they are in their mid 30's, you should be safe if you hunt around level 50. But take care just to be safe.

In the small H-9 room there are two Feu Follet, and in the big H-7 room there are four Feu Follet for you to kill.

The Feu Follets have between 1100 and 1400 hit points total. This is important to keep in mind for ones survival. Soloing the Feu Follet at the level you will be learning (around 50) is easy. You just need to hit them until they decide to Self-Destruct.

The Problem, is that if the Bomb chooses Self-Destruct while it still has most of its HP, it WILL kill you. So you have two choices to deal with this. You can go all out with damage spells when you start, and take away 50% of the bombs life before it can even make a TP move, then switch to a low damage weapon to feed TP to the bomb as you wait for the spell. Or you can Head Butt Self-Destruct if it happens before the Bomb's life is low enough for your comfort. Since Head Butt sometimes fails, it's suggested to use the reduce the Bomb's HP fast method.

In addition to the specific bombs listed above, bombs can spawn in almost any outside zone when it is foggy. The level will match the average level of other monsters in the zones.

The low level bombs are great to learn from, but easy to kill, so you need to let them hit you to build TP.

The high level bombs are evil! Hellmines and Volcanic Gas explode for thousands in damage. If you want your spell from one of those sort, have a friendly Beastmaster solo it for you.

Special notes about the spell a Blue Mage may like to know
Can I solo it? Yes. With proper care you should have no problems by your upper 40's in camp #1
Do I need any special items? Yes, a way to sneak and invisible yourself may be needed to get to camp. Setting a stun spell is mandatory, to prevent Self-Destruct if it happens too soon, as an exploding Bomb can kill you easily. Bring a low damage weapon, and warp item to save a long walk home is nice also.
Do Bombs like to use the move? Yes. With only two moves in the camp zone, they seem to use it often.
The Spell damage is equal to your HP. After you cast the spell, you be left with one HP, and will have raise sickness, and be weak for five minutes.
Self-Destruct can be used to create the Auto Refresh Trait. It counts as two points of the eight needed.
