Special Notes on Monster and it's TP Moves
Marid spawn the vermin class monsters called Chigoe when they use a TP skill. They can do this up to five times in one fight. These Chigoe will aggro who ever has hate. The Marid's tusks can be broken with critical hits from normal attacks, weapon skills, or Physical Blue Magic Spells. Marid seem to use Voracious Trunk more often once both tusks have been broken, though they will still use the spell even with both still whole. The Damage moves are not overly bad for a Paladin Tank to handle. Marid have a LOT of HP. |
Obtaining the Spell | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Minimum Blue Mage Level Needed To Acquire Spell: Level 58.
Voracious Trunk
is best hunted in the Wajaom Woodlands.
This spell can not be soloed easily. You will need a small party including a Tank, healer, and someone dedicated to killing the Chigoe that spawn. A basic experience party set up will work very well. A 73 BLU/BST reports solo kills. There is aggro on the way to camp at night, so Sneak and Invisible spells or items, or a Chocobo to get to camp is needful. Nothing more is needed.
Zone into Wajaom Woodlands and proceed to I-7/I-8 on the map. The exit areas from the path, between the two open areas to the North (I-7) and South(I-8), are safe camps. There will be sight and sound aggro on the way to them if it is night, so take precautions. Taking a Chocobo to camp is a perfect solution. At this camp you will find Marid in both of the open areas within the red circle above. There are no aggro mobs in the pull areas. Have your tank pull a Marid to camp and treat them like an experience monster. They do not aggro or link, so they are easy pulls. The Tank needs to maintain hate on the Marid while the Blue Mage and other Damage Dealers chip away at it's massive HP. Each time the Marid uses a TP move, it will spawn a Chigoe. A Weapon Skill, Critical Hit, or Tier II BLM nuke spell will kill them easily. Make sure that that party member detailed with catching and killing the Chigoe is on the ball. Getting several on the Tank will lead to his death. Only five Chigoe can spawn, so once the last is killed the party member can join in on killing the Marid. The White Mage simply needs to keep the Tank alive. A average experience party should have no problems in this camp.
Some very adventurous BLU/BST's have reported that they have soloed the spell here! Here is a compilation of the advice several have provided. Learning this spell solo is very challenging, and quite risky. Equip and use Reraise items. At level 73 BLU/BST it is possible. Having Leave is essential for soloing this spell, because otherwise you will run out of pets. Equip at least two high damage multi-hit spells like Hysteric Barrage, Disseverment, or Frenetic Rip. In addition, set the auto-refresh trait, and also used a Vermillion cloak with MP refresh Sanction. It will not hurt to have MP refresh drinks also. This is because you have very little opportunity to rest MP while soloing this spell. You will need to refresh MP any way you can. You may want to equip a sleep spell or two, just in case something goes wrong. Now as for the procedure of fighting the marids, Charm a pet, DC Red Kissers can take up to 15% of a Marids life, and sic it on a Marid. WARNING! Make sure it is not a Grand Marid, because other marids will link with it! Your pet is going to be killed quickly by the powerful marid. Be ready to Leave your current pet before it can die, charm a new pet, and put it on the Marid immediately. Do not let your pets die here or you will likely run out of pets to put on the Marid. Always have Zephyr Mantle up (run out of hate range to recast it), because the Marids hit pretty hard. For the first 5 times the Marid performs a TP attack, it will spawn a Chigoe which will immediately come after you. This is why you equip 2 of the high damage, multi-hit, quick casting spells. The Chigoe should die in one or two casts. And after the 5th chigoe spawns, you won't have to worry about anymore of them spawning. Note that the hate line here will be incredibly tight. You do not want to gain any hate other than by putting your pet onto the Marid. As if it attacks you, and breaks past Zephyr Mantle it will hurt badly. More agressive Blue Mages use Magnetite Cloud and Mysterious light to help on pet swaps, for kiting the Marid as you get the new pet onto it. But they will play with the hate line. The use of Disseverment for its massive DoT Poison is very effective. One Blue Mage suggested a Hydro Shot right after Disseverment can clear your hate issues, and put the spotlight back on your pet, yet still deal serious DoT damage. The main trick is to not run out of MP. Use Eithers, drinks, whatever. The fights run towards 10+ minutes. Plan carefully.
Zone into Bhaflau Thickets and proceed to G-8 on the map. The exit from the path leading into this open area at G-8 is a safe camp. There will be sight and sound aggro on the way to it, so take precautions. Taking a Chocobo to camp is a perfect solution. Your prey can be found in the Red circle on the map above. There are six Marid spawns here.

Special notes about the spell a Blue Mage may like to know
Can I solo it? No. You will need a party to kill Marid thanks to the Chigoes.
Do I need any special items? Yes, Sneak and Invisibility items, or a Chocobo to reach camp. A party member who can deal critical damage is very helpful.
Do Marid like to use the move? It's not the favorite, but the fights will last so long you will always see it at least once.
The Spell can steal almost any status buff except food, and provide it to the caster. You will be amazed at how good Monster buffs are!
Voracious Trunk can be used to create the Auto Refresh Trait. It counts as three points of the eight needed. |
